During this project I aim to improve and expand on my existing promotional material and social media. Social media platforms like Twitter, YouTube and Facebook are a great way to get yourself out there as millions of people use these services.
Making the Business cards - photo-shoot.
My thoughts from the start were in the simple category of "something messy" so that is what I started off with. I thought about the different kinds of mess would be good for a business card, of course bright colours, it has to be eye catching and intriguing.Initial thoughts include: Inspired by Holi the festival, where large groups of people join together and throw powder paint at each other. It's an amazing festival of happiness, colour and social interaction. I also love the personal aspect of it, on my business cards the paint could be thrown over me, it doesn't really matter if my face is showing or not.
The first shoot photo's as follows.
I just got simple bright poster paints, I really wanted to flow of the paint and so it will have to be watered down or else use a lot of paint.
The set up is outside (yes freezing cold), two soft boxes, housing white lights.
A plain wall outside, it can be cleaned easily.
Buckets, paint and hose water.
Three parts water to one part paint.
The consistency is that it didn't look transparent, liquid paint, not coloured water.
I decided to go for just three colours initially,
The camera is a Canon 5D3 with a compact flash 8GB this size allows for pictures to be taken at speed.
This is the space after pink, yellow and orange was thrown.
Even the floor looked good.
Of course the child in me had to paddle, I was already covered in paint.
A photo to get the focus set, It also showed me the colouring and exposure of the lighting.
Test throw, water was a simple way to test the direction the paint needs to be thrown and also what effect it has on the environment such as shadows. The black wire was the proposed point of impact.
As much as I wanted to I could not be in control of each element, being the subject of the photograph means there had to be communication between the photographer and thrower of paint. It's unfortunate that the bucket was in some of the photos. This can be removed with photo editing programs.
This is one of my favourite images of the pink paint. I love the vibrant colour and amount of splash.
The non continuous element of flash (the one attached to the camera) sometimes made the photos darker when it was off.
This was one of my favourites of the yellows, as you can see were right after the orange (which were out of focus). I love the flow of paint, this is exactly what I was after.
I also enjoyed this next shot with the paint splatter on the wall behind.
We also did purple, but there was something non aesthetically pleasing about the colour and the consistency of the paint seemed off.
Here I edited the photo using Adobe Photoshop CC 14, I lightened the background at the top left of the picture where the text would be on the business card.
In this photo I lightened the background, I also isolated the pink paint to creating a drop shadow in effects, this brought out the splash more.
This is a compilation video of all the photos taken in the session!
Facebook page
Facebook is a fantastic platform for a growing artist's career. As well as being a simple medium to convey work and thoughts, it is accessible to millions across the world. This is the timeline for the artist page. I used the images from the business card shoot as the cover photo for the page, it is very bright and eye-catching and illustrates the overall theme of mess perfectly.
It is perfect platform for sharing projects, both behind the scenes and the final object. The photo on the timeline here is from the making of my YouTube opening sequence.
Facebook is also great for sharing things from person to person or from different platforms. I use my page to promote my YouTube videos.
I have also made albums for photos of my various projects. Its an easy way to share projects n a visual way for others to see. In the descriptions of each album I also gave a link to the Blog pages relating to each project.
Twitter is another platform, the limitation of 140 characters means it is imperative that what is going on is conveyed clearly and concisely.
I love sharing pictures on twitter especially behind the scenes pictures.
Flickr
This is more of a personal thing, but Flickr is a great, I have both project an
YouTube
YouTube is one of my favourite platforms, as an avid documenter and editor, my channel has developed from simple means to get videos on my Blog, to an actual channel with subscribers. Yes all 5, I'm very proud.
On YouTube you can make playlists of your's and others video's. This allows the relevant videos to be grouped together.
Thinking about my brand as it were, it is good to have continuity between each of the videos. I made this opening title, its's only six seconds long so doesn't waste time.

C.V.
For my C.V I knew I wanted it to fit into the theme of paint dripping or messiness in some way so I tried the design on the left, which is quite honestly hideous. I talked to the student careers officer and went to two lectures and edited my design completely, based on what I had leant. Now it is a lot less busy. the qualifications area takes up a lot less space and it includes more about my skills.
Business cards
My original photos with the paint splatter were meant for the business cards. However, once I tried out with the information (see above preview) I found that without moving over the original image the text was too small to be easily visible.
I changed the opacity of the image and made the words bigger and moved my name around.
In this I made the words even larger, now I don't need to worry about the image behind the words should be the main focus. I added what I do at the bottom as I realised that is actually rather important.
Powder paint photo shoot
This shoot was especially difficult, I wanted to have another set of photos to work with as the last were more suitable cover photos, and banners. I had the same camera equipment as before the Canon 5D3 with a compact flash 8GB this size allowing the pictures to be taken at speed, but I used four lights this time instead of two. Two helpers threw the powder paint while the pictures were taken.
Here are a few of the good ones, it was an on off sun kind of day, but considering I would need to edit the photos anyway it was not to bad.
These are the final images I chose, I simple moved the levels around and dodged the background to lighten it in Photoshop, this made the colours sharp and bright. This will allow for the words of the business cards to be more visible as the picture's main point has more of a vertical line than the paint splashing one,
Using the format of the text from the last design and inserted the new image. The image is still visible with the large clear text, the design is bright and will contrast nicely with the pictures from the borrowers shoot which will be darker.
With my final photos and a little editing to add the text and make sure it fitted, these are my final business card designs!
