Start with your idea.
For my project, set design for "Further than the furthest thing" is set on the isolated island of Tristan da Cunha.
So my initial set design idea a house on a grassy island hill.
A simple enough idea needs to be fuelled with images, so from this idea go out and take photos of grass, bricks, hills, water, sand.
Here are my primary images, I really liked the colour changes in he grass and the fresh light green colours.
Now development of the idea. Going back to the text is the best way to gain inspiration, also searching deeper into what inspired the Author. In the text the first act is set on the island, this includes 2 houses, patches (food growing areas), natural pools, the church, the docks and the beach.
The image in my head is a hill with a house on top and then grass and the sea. I think a multi-scene set would be great, so there wouldn't be any large set changes, no backgrounds flying in and out all the time during the first act.
Tristan is an isolated island off the coast of Africa, its caused a few shipwrecks in its time and I can imagine there being shipwrecks around the island boarders.
